His story is coming to the series soon.
Class of '89
Lamont Greer grew up in east Urbana, close enough to Crystal Lake Park to fish it after school. His family had work but never money. Senior year at Urbana High, class of '89, he watched friends line up factory applications and felt the walls of the town close in.
He wasn't running from trouble. He was running from smallness. The Navy recruiter didn't have to talk long.
The Navy showed me the world so I could come home and see this town clear.
The Way Back
Twenty years and four ships later, he retired in 2009 and surprised himself by wanting to come home. The town that once felt small now just felt his.
He took counseling training through the VA and spends his weeks helping local veterans file claims, find housing, and get honest about what they carried back. He works out of a hall off Cunningham Avenue and answers his phone at hours a phone shouldn't ring. He figures somebody did it for sailors before him. His turn.
