The Bus Out
Aaron Feaster grew up in a small Mississippi town where the main employer had closed before he was born. His family wasn't poor in a dramatic way. Just the ordinary way, where every plan dies at the price tag.
At eighteen he had sixty dollars, no car, and a recruiter's phone number a teammate's father had given him. He didn't join the Air Force out of patriotism. He joined because it was a bus out. The patriotism came later, and it came real.
I joined at eighteen with sixty dollars to my name. The Air Force taught me everything after that.
After the Uniform
He served twenty-four years across eleven duty stations and retired a master sergeant in 2022. He'd managed aircraft maintenance crews and budgets bigger than his hometown's. His wife grew up in Urbana, so when the uniform came off, they came here.
They live on a quiet block off Windsor Road now. He does some consulting, but the work he cares about is career days, sitting in high school classrooms telling kids what enlistment actually is. The pay, the trades, the fine print. He brings documents. Kids deserve the fine print.
